Artist Talk
Tuesday 15 May 6-9pm
The fortnightly A/V social session in Melbourne's
west has returned after a busy first year of
hosting international screenings, new work
presentations and the unique A/V gigs that you
won't find anywhere else in Melbourne. Kicking off
the new season of free FAV-SC events at Footscray
Arts we present one of Australia's most
provocative and outspoken culture-crunchers,
Philip Brophy.
An influential artist, writer, sound-designer,
logo-designer and film-maker who unfailingly calls
it as he sees it, Brophy's intoxicating
audio-visions have exploded Lisa McCune's womb on
celluloid, squatted the vocal chords of MTV
baby-boomer crooners Billy Joel and Phil Collins
and envisioned the future of Plenty Road Preston
as a post-consumer wasteland inhabited by weary
young-adults in the midst of an
ecological-entertainment apocalypse.
BIO:
----
Philip Brophy's work has been seen in Australia
and Internationally for a number of years and
comprises of reworking pre-existing media,
composing for film, live music, mixing, mastering,
installing and presenting audiovisual work in
surround sound environments.
After a series of experimental mixed-media works
exhibited in art and non-art contexts over many
years, Philip Brophy has consolidated his
interests to produce a range of audiovisual works
focusing on his key interests in pop, sex and
music. These recent works include the Evaporated
Music 2 (exhibited at Artspace, Sydney) and
Evaporated Music 1 (exhibited at Anna Schwartz
Gallery, Melbourne and the National Gallery of
Victoria, Melbourne), and the 3-screen Dolby 5.1
installation Fluorescent commissioned for the
Contemporary Art Projects at the Art Gallery of
New South Wales, Sydney and recently included in
the 2006 Singapore Biennale.
