[Rumori] seeking online collaboration suggestions

A friend and I work on some multimedia projects together and we're looking for a better way to share files for various projects.

currently we use an external hard drive and a custom-coded interface that coordinates files, backs up and catalogs all the various audio and video samples we are using.

the biggest complaint/problem is the physical exchange of the drive so i'm trying to find the best (good yet relatively cheap) option to do this online.

a common source for the db that catalogs and the files (ideally serving as both exchange and backup).

I can find very expensive solutions that will work and very cheap options that won't because the only way to move files is through a proprietary tool. I've found some project collaboration solutions but the file sizes are too restrictive to for the media files we are using.

I'm betting/hoping someone here might have some wisdom to share. I tried searching the detrius archive, but no matter what keywords i enter, i'm getting zero results. i've searched a couple days online but can't seem to find the combo of keywords...

Any ideas/help/responses/empathetic nods would be much appreciated.
