Performance Brief

Spiral is an installation created by the French artist Mathieu
Briand.
It is at the same time, a sculpture, a sound installation and
a performance
space, which aims at generating a constant performative
dynamic. The Artist
and Tate, wish to invite Composers, Musicians and
innovative DJs to use the
unique context offered by Spiral, in order
to creatively expand the
installation with a range of sound and
performance activities throughout the
day.

Spiral consists of five turntables, one etching machine to burn
new
vinyl records, a matrix of four vinyl records on which sounds
from
machines and other samples have been etched into locked groove
loops
by the artist, two mixing desks and the possibility of plugging in
up
to seven additional instruments, laptops and other hardware.
Any
combination of these elements may be used in conjunction with your
own
proposed work. A speaker system is also integrated into the
installation and
will be audible across the entire space. The
installation will be positioned
in the east end of the Turbine Hall
and be viewable from the ground and other
heights from the bridge and
galleries.

Spiral will be installed in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, across
two
days of the Long Week-End, a festival dedicated to performance,
music, film
and participatory installation. Events are presented
across 4 nights and 3
days, responding in various ways to the works
and themes evident in Tate’s
Collection. Spiral will function on this
occasion as a performance space that
we wish to animate throughout
the day between the hours of 10.00 to
18.00.

We wish to welcome proposals that would be specific to Spiral and
that
may be responsive to the Tate Collection’s States of Flux theme
<A

You
should propose a 30 minute performance to take place within the
given
facilities. Your proposal can be based on any musical style and
can
include additional acoustic instruments as well as electronic
sound.
You are also invited to propose creative ways to explore
the
materiality of sound and its ability to dialogue with the
sculptural
and architectural aspects of this installation.

In addition to the performance proposal, there is also an opportunity
to
develop your project in collaboration with the public or to
propose workshops
with young people, should it be relevant to your
interests. This is not a
requirement however it may be of value to
you, to develop the work into the
specifics of the space, in context
of an additional one hour participatory
session previous to your
proposed performance, with participation resulting
in a workshop or a
sound/sample gathering exercise, to be used later as a
part of the
performance. An assistant Curator and other Tate personnel will
be
available to help manage any participatory aspects. If you have
ideas
for workshops, but feel you would be unable to facilitate
that
yourself, we may be able to connect you with a workshop tutor
who
could assist you with realizing the idea. Alternatively
participation
may be proposed as part of the 30 minute performance
itself.

We are offering a fee of £300 for contracted Artists.
Additional
Expenses like travel or musical accompaniment may be
negotiated
within reason. Production resources and technical support will
also
be provided.

We would like to receive proposals for a new improvisational work or
an
adaptation of a previous work, no longer than 2 pages; including
your
proposed idea, relevant instrumentation details, how you intend
to use the
existing facilities, what else you may be bringing with
you, as well as a
comment on the use of space if applicable.

Please include with your proposal a list of foreseen technical
support
requirements and an estimate of expenses. If you choose to
work with others
please ensure everyone involved is listed in your
proposal.

Please also attach a short biography and a recording or documentation
of
previous work.

Proposals will be received by the Curators and discussed with
the
Artist, Mathieu Briand previous to any confirmation of engagement.

States of Flux: The central space of this wing is devoted to the
early
twentieth-century movements Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism.
These avant-garde
artists broke with traditional ideas of picture
making, seeking a more
dynamic and fractured visual language to
represent the complex reality of
modern life and the machine age.
Surrounding displays show how these
developments influenced
experimental film, photography and design, sometimes
with a more
pointed political agenda. Another room shows the
post-Impressionist
art from which the younger generation were breaking away.
Cubist
innovations such as collage were central to the emergence of Pop
Art
which combined high and low culture, art and commerce into
forceful,
celebratory and sometimes critical visions of the post-war
consumer
era. More recently, techniques such as collage, appropriation
and
assemblage have been reinvented and transformed by younger artists
to
reflect the multi-layered texture of urban life. New
digital
technologies have enabled contemporary artists to adopt methods
of
sampling, mixing and montaging associated with alternative music
and
club cultures.
